It is mined from bedrock in the Apennine Mountains near Carrara, Italy. It comes from the same quarry as Bianco Carrara and is often called Bardiglio Scuro, "scuro" meaning "dark color" in Italian. The Bardiglio marble base natural stone tiles feature a mix of light and dark gray tones within a slab, along with some areas of white tones. This marble also has "wet veins" that make each natural stone different. Due to the qualities of the stone, the slabs are matched by book. That is, slab one and slab two are cut and polished to create a mirror image of each other. These are then held in order, allowing for even flow in pits in the raw material.
Before the stone reaches the polishing stages, the pits are filled with polyester resin. Depending on how deep each pit is, the resin may shrink as it dries. This will make the surface of the filled area slightly lower than the rest. However, this does not detract from the durability, maintenance or beauty of the stone. In the case of Bardiglio marble as natural stone tiles, it is recommended that it be sealed to ensure longevity.
It is common for Bardiglio natural stone tiles to have some dry surface veins that are white in appearance. The factory uses a flowable epoxy to fill these veins during production.
